FYI: Permit can still be obtained at 15 1/2 years old!

The law regarding minimum age for Ohio Learner's Permit states: "The permit is issued to a person who is at least 15 years and 6 months old."

Students may start the classroom portion of the Teen Driver Ed Program at 15 years and 5 months old - before you get your permit.

UPDATE...Substitute House Bill 343 is now in effect. This new substitute bill does NOT change the age for obtaining a permit. Summary of Sub House Bill 343 (effective 4/6/07)

Temporary Permit

1. Obtain at age 15 and half years old
   • Has permit (photo ID and paper) in car
   • Driver must be accompanied by a licenced operator who is either a parent or a legal guardian for age 15½ - 16
   • After age 16 during temporary permit, driver must be accompanied by a licensed operator 21 or over and not intoxicated.
   • Total number of occupants cannot exceed number of restraining devices in the vehicle.
   • Hour restrictions: 12 midnight – 6 a.m.
     • Except with a parent/guardian who is not intoxicated.
     • Hour restriction is not a primary enforcement.

Probationary License

1. 16 to 17 years old
   • Hour restrictions: 12 midnight – 6 a.m.
     • Exemption for when traveling to or from work with a note.
       • Employers cannot be held liable for damages in a civil action.
     • Exemption for official functions sponsored by school.
     • Exemption for emergency.
      
   •  No more than one non-family member in car.
     • Except when driver is with a parent or guardian.
   • During first 6 months of a probationary license (starting on day obtained), or if over 16 years 6 months but less than 17, if a driver receives a moving violation, there are increased penalties:
     • Must be accompanied by parent/guardian.
       
       
2. 17 to 18 years old
   • Hour restrictions: 1 a.m.– 5 a.m.
     • Exemptions for when traveling to or from work with a note
